Melissa & Tyson from Trademark Homes are back in with episode 8! They spend some time in one of their favourite East Regina neighbourhoods, The Greens on Gardiner.

There's been a lot of tension created by the media the last little while with the new mortgage rules the Canadian government have announced. Everywhere you turn, it seems as though the fear is being injected into first time home buyers. "BUY NOW!" or "It's a great time to buy!" Phrases that seems to be echoed by everyone in Real Estate. "My only option is now a condo." Words that seem to spill out from young adults everywhere.

The long and short of it... affordability has been stitched into the DNA of why we build homes. We've been preaching about living within your means for a long while now, it just so happens that the new mortgage rules just force first time buyers into that reality.

Last year, we were selected by the Hospitals of Regina Foundation Home Lottery to build the Fall 2017 Grand Prize Show Home.

After a years worth of hard work, we handed the keys over to the foundation as they prepare to open to the public this weekend. This project has been a milestone build for us and encompasses everything the Trademark team has been chasing the last few years.

We're excited yet extremely humbled to be awarded the chance to build this one-of-a-kind home. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you to every single one of our building partners, who helped bring our rustic-contemporary vision to life.

It seems as though everywhere you look, millennials are the most discussed age demographic. We talk about how they consume media, how they spend their money, their time, and even how they learn and get educated.

For a lot of millennials, they grew up in that 2000 square foot home, on a pie shaped lot, with the huge yard and triple garage. Some would refer to it as "The American Dream" (better yet, Canadian dream). As we've watched house prices rise over the last number of years, this reality has become a distant memory for those of us who grew up as a child of the 90's.

Now that attainability has changed, what is it millennials want in housing?

It’s a week where we celebrate Saskatchewan entrepreneurs and creativity through art, design, fashion, hair, makeup, and music. It’s a week for us to come together and learn from one another, to see design and creativity through different lenses, be challenged to step outside of our comfort zones, try new things, and find common ground in our individuality. The Sask Fashion Week vibe is contagious – designers, make up artists, hair stylists, volunteers, and local businesses coming together to celebrate art, beauty and design.

It takes a village…. To raise a house.

I can remember my first Master Awards Gala in 2008 like it was yesterday. As a new home builder, we walked into this room full of recognizable home builders and industry trades who had been in the business for years. They were being celebrated for their hard work and dedication to beautifying and diversifying Regina’s neighbourhoods, both new and old. It was my dream to one day be recognized among these fabulous builders… and this past Saturday we were.

9 years ago, while sitting in a one room leased office space, never did we imagine our little company would go on to build our own commercial space.

It's not about boasting... it's about sincere thankfulness. We feel truly blessed to be in the position to build our new office space. To offer a greater customer experience for our clients, and to create more of a family dynamic by having both office and site staff all under one roof.

Our Provincial Government has announced a new First Home Plan for Saskatchewan residents - specifically students that qualify for the Graduate Retention Program (GRP). Beginning May 1, 2016, GRP recipients will be able to use up to $10,000 of their unused GRP benefits toward the down payment on the purchase of a first home.

That moment when you’re laying in bed on Saturday morning, looking on Pinterest and the words “our bedroom needs a small makeover” come out of your mouth. I am pretty sure James, my husband, cringed the moment he heard those words, because after 13 years together he knows 2 things too well about me: 1) Nothing I want is ever “small” and 2) when I start a project I am terrible at knowing where to stop. Before I knew it I had our friend Matty over taking before photos of the bedroom, I had listed and sold all the furniture on the local used website, and our room was now empty besides the king mattress laying on the floor. I guess I don’t do things small and I don’t really have an off switch. I am excited for this adventure, as we have never lived long enough in a home to do a renovation.
